Here are two excellent articles about tzedakah in the Forward from my colleague Rabbi Jill Jacobs.  Jill is a Conservative rabbi and the rabbi-in-residence at the Jewish Funds for Justice, an organization my regular readers have already heard about.  Jill argues that we should be careful about we're calling "tzedakah" — not all charitable is really tzedakah.  In the second article she also talks about the traditional Jewish tithe (giving ten percent of income to tzedakah) and what taxes and giving could truly count as tzedakah.
